Read it

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 1

   أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْفِيلِ

   Have you not considered, [O Muḥammad], how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant?^[1992]

   أَلَمْ تَرَ

   أَلَمْ تَعْلَمْ؟

   بِأَصْحَابِ الْفِيلِ

   وَهُمْ: أَبْرَهَةُ الحَبَشِيُّ، وَجَيْشُهُ الَّذِينَ أَرَادُوا تَدْمِيرَ الكَعْبَةِ.

   Translator’s notes

   [1992]- i.e., the army under the command of Abrahah al-Ashram which was accompanied by a huge elephant and came with the intention of destroying the Kaʿbah at Makkah.

   Tafsir Arabic

   ألم تعلم -أيها الرسول- كيف فعل ربك بأصحاب الفيل: أبرهة الحبشي وجيشه الذين أرادوا تدمير الكعبة المباركة؟

2. 2

   أَلَمْ يَجْعَلْ كَيْدَهُمْ فِى تَضْلِيلٍ

   Did He not make their plan into misguidance?^[1993]

   Word meanings 2 Arabic

   كَيْدَهُمْ

   تَدْبِيرَهُمْ وَسَعْيَهُمْ لِتَخْرِيبِ الكَعْبَةِ.

   تَضْلِيلٍ

   تَضْيِيعٍ، وَإِبْطَالٍ، وَخَسَارٍ.

   ألم يجعل ما دبَّروه من شر في إبطال وتضييع؟

3. 3

   وَأَرْسَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلَ

   And He sent against them birds in flocks,

   أَبَابِيلَ

   جَمَاعَاتٍ مُتَتَابِعَةً.

   وبعث عليهم طيرًا في جماعات متتابعة، تقذفهم بحجارة من طين متحجِّر.

   تَرْمِيهِم بِحِجَارَةٍ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ

   Striking them with stones of hard clay,

   طِينٍ مُتَحَجِّرٍ.

   فَجَعَلَهُمْ كَعَصْفٍ مَّأْكُولٍۭ

   And He made them like eaten straw.^[1994]

   Word meanings 1 Arabic

   كَعَصْفٍ مَّاكُولٍ

   مُحَطَّمِينَ؛ كَأَوْرَاقِ الزَّرْعِ اليَابِسَةِ الَّتِي أَكَلَتْهَا البَهَائِمُ، ثُمَّ رَمَتْ بِهَا.

   Translator’s notes

   [1994]- i.e., husks which have been chewed by cattle. This event took place in the year of the Prophet's birth.

   Tafsir Arabic

   فجعلهم به محطمين كأوراق الزرع اليابسة التي أكلتها البهائم ثم رمت بها.
