بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

1. 1

   ٱلْقَارِعَةُ

   The Striking Calamity -

   الْقَارِعَةُ

   القِيَامَةُ الَّتِي تَقْرَعُ القُلُوبَ بِأَهْوَالِهَا.

   Tafsir Arabic

   الساعة التي تقرع قلوب الناس بأهوالها.

2. 2

   مَا ٱلْقَارِعَةُ

   What is the Striking Calamity?

   Tafsir Arabic

   أيُّ شيء هذه القارعة؟

3. 3

   وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْقَارِعَةُ

   And what can make you know what is the Striking Calamity?

   Tafsir Arabic

   وأيُّ شيء أعلمك بها؟

4. 4

   يَوْمَ يَكُونُ ٱلنَّاسُ كَٱلْفَرَاشِ ٱلْمَبْثُوثِ

   It is the Day when people will be like moths, dispersed,^[1975]

   Word meanings 1 Arabic

   الْمَبْثُوثِ

   المُنْتَشِرِ.

   Translator’s notes

   [1975]- The people will be as such after having been expelled from their graves.

   Tafsir Arabic

   في ذلك اليوم يكون الناس في كثرتهم وتفرقهم وحركتهم كالفراش المنتشر، وهو الذي يتساقط في النار.

5. 5

   وَتَكُونُ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَٱلْعِهْنِ ٱلْمَنفُوشِ

   And the mountains will be like wool, fluffed up.^[1976]

   Word meanings 2 Arabic

   كَالْعِهْنِ

   كَالصُّوفِ المَصْبُوغِ بِأَلْوَانٍ مُخْتَلِفَةٍ.

   الْمَنفُوشِ

   الَّذِي مُزِّقَ، وَنُفِشَ، فَتَفَرَّقَتْ أَجْزَاؤُهُ.

   Translator’s notes

   [1976]- i.e., beginning to disintegrate.

   Tafsir Arabic

   وتكون الجبال كالصوف متعدد الألوان الذي يُنْفَش باليد، فيصير هباء ويزول.

6. 6

   فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ

   Then as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds],

   Word meanings 1 Arabic

   ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ

   رَجَحَتْ مَوَازِينُ حَسَنَاتِهِ.

   Tafsir covers ayat 6–7 Arabic

   فأما من رجحت موازين حسناته، فهو في حياة مرضية في الجنة.

7. 7

   فَهُوَ فِى عِيشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍ

   He will be in a pleasant life.

8. 8

   وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ

   But as for one whose scales are light,

   Tafsir covers ayat 8–9 Arabic

   وأما من خفت موازين حسناته، ورجحت موازين سيئاته، فمأواه جهنم.

9. 9

   فَأُمُّهُۥ هَاوِيَةٌ

   His refuge^[1977] will be an abyss.^[1978]

   Word meanings 1 Arabic

   فَأُمُّهُ هَاوِيَةٌ

   مَاوَاهُ إِلَى جَهَنَّمَ يَهْوِي عَلَى رَاسِهِ.

   Translator’s notes

   [1977]- Literally, "mother" (a man's original refuge) , which will envelop him as in an embrace.

   [1978]- i.e., the pit of Hellfire.

10. 10

    وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا هِيَهْ

    And what can make you know what that is?

    Tafsir Arabic

    وما أدراك -أيها الرسول- ما هذه الهاوية؟

11. 11

    نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌۢ

    It is a Fire, intensely hot.

    Word meanings 1 Arabic

    حَامِيَةٌ

    حَارَّةٌ قَدِ اشْتَدَّ إِيقَادُهَا.

    Tafsir Arabic

    إنها نار قد حَمِيت من الوقود عليها.
