Surah 89
Al-Fajr
The DawnRead it
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
-
By the dawn
Word meanings 1 Arabic
- وَالْفَجْرِ
- قَسَمٌ بِالوَقْتِ المَعْرُوفِ أَوَّلَ النَّهَارِ.
Tafsir covers ayat 1–5 Arabic
أقسم الله سبحانه بوقت الفجر، والليالي العشر الأوَل من ذي الحجة وما شرفت به، وبكل شفع وفرد، وبالليل إذا يَسْري بظلامه، أليس في الأقسام المذكورة مَقْنَع لذي عقل؟

And [by] ten nights[1913]

- وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ
- قَسَمٌ بِلَيَالِي عَشْرِ ذِي الحِجَّةِ الأُوَلِ، وَمَا شَرُفَتْ بِهِ مِنْ أَعْمَالٍ.

- قَسَمٌ بِكُلِّ زَوْجٍ، وَفَرْدٍ.

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا
And [by] the night when it passes,

- يَسْرِي بِظَلَامِهِ، وَجَوَابُ القَسَمِ مَحْذُوفٌ، تَقْدِيرُهُ: لَتُبْعَثُنَّ.
-
هَلْ فِى ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ
Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?[1914]

- لِّذِي حِجْرٍ
- لِصَاحِبِ عَقْلٍ.
Translator’s notes
[1914]- Based upon the following verses, what has been sworn to by Allāh is that He will certainly punish the disbelievers.
-
أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ
Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ʿAad -
Tafsir covers ayat 6–8 Arabic
ألم تر -أيها الرسول- كيف فعل ربُّك بقوم عاد، قبيلة إرم، ذات القوة والأبنية المرفوعة على الأعمدة، التي لم يُخلق مثلها في البلاد في عِظَم الأجساد وقوة البأس؟
-
[With] Iram[1915] - who had lofty pillars,[1916]

- إِرَمَ
- قَبِيلَةِ إِرَمَ؛ نِسْبَةُ إِلَى جَدِّهِمْ.
- ذَاتِ الْعِمَادِ
- صَاحِبَةِ القُوَّةِ، وَالأَبْنِيَةِ المَرْفُوعَةِ عَلَى الأَعْمِدَةِ.
Translator’s notes
[1915]- Another name for the first people of ʿAad, to whom Prophet Hūd was sent.
[1916]- Supporting their tents or buildings.
-
ٱلَّتِى لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ
The likes of whom had never been created in the land?
-
وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱلصَّخْرَ
And [with] Thamūd, who carved out the rocks in the valley?

- جَابُوا
- قَطَعُوا.
- بِالْوَادِ
- وَادِي القُرَى شَمَالَ غَرْبِ الجَزِيرَةِ العَرَبِيَّةِ.
Tafsir Arabic
وكيف فعل بثمود قوم صالح الذين قطعوا الصخر بالوادي واتخذوا منه بيوتًا؟
-
وَفِرْعَوْنَ
And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes?[1917]

- ذِي الْأَوْتَادِ
- صَاحِبِ الجُنُودِ الَّذِينَ ثَبَّتُوا مُلْكَهُ.

[1917]- By which he tortured people.
Tafsir Arabic
وكيف فعل بفرعون مَلِك «مصر» ، صاحب الجنود الذين ثبَّتوا مُلْكه، وقوَّوا له أمره؟
-
ٱلَّذِينَ فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ
[All of] whom oppressed within the lands

- طَغَوْا
- تَجَاوَزُوا الحَدَّ فِي الإِفْسَادِ.
Tafsir covers ayat 11–14 Arabic
هؤلاء الذين استبدُّوا، وظلموا في بلاد الله، فأكثروا فيها بظلمهم الفساد، فصب عليهم ربُّك عذابا شديدا. إنَّ ربك -أيها الرسول- لبالمرصاد لمن يعصيه، يمهله قليلا ثم يأخذه أخْذَ عزيز مقتدر.
-
فَأَكْثَرُوا۟ فِيهَا ٱلْفَسَادَ
And increased therein the corruption.
-
فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ
So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.

- سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ
- عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا.
-
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ
Indeed, your Lord is in observation.

- لَبِالْمِرْصَادِ
- يَرْقُبُ العَاصِينَ، وَيُمْهِلُهُمْ، ثُمَّ يَاخُذُهُمْ.
-
فَأَمَّا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَأَكْرَمَهُۥ وَنَعَّمَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَكْرَمَنِ
And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."[1918]

- ابْتَلَاهُ
- اخْتَبَرَهُ بِالنِّعْمَةِ.
Translator’s notes
[1918]- He is proud rather than grateful, attributing the favor to his own merit.
Tafsir Arabic
فأما الإنسان إذا ما اختبره ربه بالنعمة، وبسط له رزقه، وجعله في أطيب عيش، فيظن أن ذلك لكرامته عند ربه، فيقول: ربي أكرمن.
-
وَأَمَّآ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَهَـٰنَنِ
But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."

- فَقَدَرَ
- ضَيَّقَ.
Tafsir Arabic
وأما إذا ما اختبره، فضيَّق عليه رزقه، فيظن أن ذلك لهوانه على الله، فيقول: ربي أهانن.
-
كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ
No![1919] But you do not honor the orphan

- الْيَتِيمَ
- الَّذِي مَاتَ أَبُوهُ قَبْلَ بُلُوغِهِ.
Translator’s notes
[1919]- It is not like you imagine. Rather, Allāh tries people through prosperity and hardship and rewards both gratitude and patience with honor in the Hereafter.
Tafsir Arabic
ليس الأمر كما يظن هذا الإنسان، بل الإكرام بطاعة الله، والإهانة بمعصيته، وأنتم لا تكرمون اليتيم الذي مات أبوه وهو صغير، ولا تحسنون معاملته، ولا يَحُثُّ بعضكم بعضًا على إطعام المحتاج الذي لا يملك ما يكفيه ويسد حاجته، وتأكلون حقوق الآخرين في الميراث أكلا شديدًا، وتحبون المال حبًا مفرطًا.
-
وَلَا تَحَـٰٓضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ
And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.

- وَلَا تَحَاضُّونَ
- لَا يَحُثُّ بَعْضُكُمْ بَعْضًا.
Tafsir covers ayat 18–20 Arabic
ليس الأمر كما يظن هذا الإنسان، بل الإكرام بطاعة الله، والإهانة بمعصيته، وأنتم لا تكرمون اليتيم، ولا تحسنون معاملته، ولا يَحُثُّ بعضكم بعضًا على إطعام المسكين، وتأكلون حقوق الآخرين في الميراث أكلا شديدًا، وتحبون المال حبًا مفرطًا.
-
وَتَأْكُلُونَ أَكْلًا
And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,[1920]

- التُّرَاثَ
- المِيرَاثَ.
- لَّمًّا
- شَدِيدًا.
Translator’s notes
[1920]- Not caring whether it is lawful or unlawful.
-
وَتُحِبُّونَ ٱلْمَالَ حُبًّا
And you love wealth with immense love.
