21. 21

    إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا

    Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait

    مِرْصَادًا

    تَرْصُدُ أَهْلَهَا، وَتَرْقُبُهُمْ.

    Tafsir covers ayat 21–26 Arabic

    إن جهنم كانت يومئذ ترصد أهل الكفر الذين أُعِدَّت لهم، للكافرين مرجعًا، ماكثين فيها دهورًا متعاقبة لا تنقطع، لا يَطْعَمون فيها ما يُبْرد حرَّ السعير عنهم، ولا شرابًا يرويهم، إلا ماءً حارًا، وصديد أهل النار، يجازَون بذلك جزاء عادلا موافقًا لأعمالهم التي كانوا يعملونها في الدنيا.

22. 22

    لِّلطَّـٰغِينَ مَـَٔابًا

    For the transgressors, a place of return,

23. 23

    لَّـٰبِثِينَ فِيهَآ أَحْقَابًا

    In which they will remain for ages [unending].

    أَحْقَابًا

    دُهُورًا لَا تَنْقَطِعُ.

24. 24

    لَّا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًا وَلَا شَرَابًا

    They will not taste therein [any] coolness or drink.

    بَرْدًا

    مَا يُبَرِّدُ حَرَّ النَّارِ عَلَى أَجْسَادِهِمْ.

25. 25

    إِلَّا حَمِيمًا وَغَسَّاقًا

    Except scalding water and [foul] purulence -

    حَمِيمًا

    مَاءً حَارًّا بَالِغًا نِهَايَةَ الحَرَارَةِ.

    وَغَسَّاقًا

    صَدِيدَ أَهْلِ النَّارِ.

26. 26

    جَزَآءً وِفَاقًا

    An appropriate recompense.^[1824]

    وِفَاقًا

    عَادِلًا، مُوَافِقًا لِأَعْمَالِهِمْ.

    Translator’s notes

    [1824]- In proportion to and comparable with their crimes.

27. 27

    إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ لَا يَرْجُونَ حِسَابًا

    Indeed, they were not expecting an account

    لَا يَرْجُونَ

    لَا يَخَافُونَ.

    Tafsir covers ayat 27–30 Arabic

    إنهم كانوا لا يخافون يوم الحساب فلم يعملوا له، وكذَّبوا بما جاءتهم به الرسل تكذيبا، وكلَّ شيء علمناه وكتبناه في اللوح المحفوظ، فذوقوا -أيها الكافرون- جزاء أعمالكم، فلن نزيدكم إلا عذابًا فوق عذابكم.

28. 28

    وَكَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا كِذَّابًا

    And denied Our verses with [emphatic] denial.

29. 29

    وَكُلَّ شَىْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَـٰهُ كِتَـٰبًا

    But all things We have enumerated in writing.

    أَحْصَيْنَاهُ

    حَفِظْنَاهُ، وَضَبَطْنَاهُ مَكْتُوبًا فِي اللَّوْحِ المَحْفُوظِ.

30. 30

    فَذُوقُوا۟ فَلَن نَّزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًا

    "So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment."^[1825]

    Translator’s notes

    [1825]- This announcement will be made to the companions of Hell.

31. 31

    إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا

    Indeed, for the righteous is attainment^[1826] -

    مَفَازًا

    فَوْزًا بِدُخُولِهِمُ الجَنَّةَ، أَوْ مَكَانًا يَفُوزُونَ بِهِ؛ وَهُوَ الجَنَّةُ.

    Translator’s notes

    [1826]- Of security, success and reward, including escape and safety from Hell.

    Tafsir covers ayat 31–35 Arabic

    إن للذين يخافون ربهم ويعملون صالحًا، فوزًا بدخولهم الجنة. إن لهم بساتين عظيمة وأعنابًا، ولهم زوجات حديثات السن، نواهد مستويات في سن واحدة، ولهم كأس مملوءة خمرًا. لا يسمعون في هذه الجنة باطلا من القول، ولا يكذب بعضهم بعضًا.

32. 32

    حَدَآئِقَ وَأَعْنَـٰبًا

    Gardens and grapevines

    Word meanings 1 Arabic

    حَدَائِقَ

    بَسَاتِينَ عَظِيمَةً قَدْ أَحْدَقَتْ بِهَا الأَشْجَارُ.

33. 33

    وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتْرَابًا

    And young women [companions] of equal age.

    Word meanings 2 Arabic

    وَكَوَاعِبَ

    حَدِيثَاتِ السِّنِّ، نَوَاهِدَ.

    أَتْرَابًا

    مُسْتَوِيَاتٍ فِي سِنٍّ وَاحِدَةٍ.

34. 34

    وَكَأْسًا دِهَاقًا

    And a full cup.^[1827]

    Word meanings 1 Arabic

    دِهَاقًا

    مَمْلُوءَةً خَمْرًا.

    Translator’s notes

    [1827]- Of wine which is delicious and does not intoxicate.

35. 35

    لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا كِذَّٰبًا

    No ill speech will they hear therein or any falsehood -

    لَغْوًا

    بَاطِلًا مِنَ القَوْلِ.

36. 36

    جَزَآءً مِّن رَّبِّكَ عَطَآءً حِسَابًا

    [As] reward from your Lord, [a generous] gift [made due by] account,^[1828]

    Word meanings 1 Arabic

    حِسَابًا

    كَثِيرًا، كَافِيًا لَهُمْ.

    Translator’s notes

    [1828]- i.e., as a result of both their own righteous deeds and the limitless generosity of Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) . Another meaning is "a gift calculated [to be adequate]."

    Tafsir covers ayat 36–39 Arabic

    لهم كل ذلك جزاء ومنَّة من الله وعطاءً كثيرًا كافيًا لهم، ربِّ السموات والأرض وما بينهما، رحمنِ الدنيا والآخرة، لا يملكون أن يسألوه إلا فيما أذن لهم فيه، يوم يقوم جبريل عليه السلام والملائكة مصطفِّين، لا يشفعون إلا لمن أذن له الرحمن في الشفاعة، وقال حقًا وسدادًا. ذلك اليوم الحق الذي لا ريب في وقوعه، فمن شاء النجاة مِن أهواله فليتخذ إلى ربه مرجعًا بالعمل الصالح.

37. 37

    رَّبِّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ۖ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًا

    [From] the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Most Merciful. They possess not from Him [authority for] speech.^[1829]

    خِطَابًا

    كَلَامًا، وَسُؤَالًا إِلَّا بإِذْنِهِ.

    Translator’s notes

    [1829]- None of Allāh's creatures can plead with Him on the Day of Judgement except by His permission.

38. 38

    يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلرُّوحُ وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ صَفًّا ۖ لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًا

    The Day that the Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is correct.

    الرُّوحُ

    جِبْرِيلُ - عليه السلام -.

    صَفًّا

    مُصْطَفِّينَ.

    لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ

    لَا يَشْفَعُونَ.

    صَوَابًا

    حَقًّا، وَسَدَادًا.

39. 39

    ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلْحَقُّ ۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ مَـَٔابًا

    That is the True [i.e., certain] Day; so he who wills may take to his Lord a [way of] return.^[1830]

    Word meanings 2 Arabic

    الْحَقُّ

    الَّذِي لَا رَيْبَ فِي وُقُوعِهِ.

    مَآبًا

    مرْجِعًا بِالعَمَلِ الصَّالِحِ.

    Translator’s notes

    [1830]- i.e., a direct route through correct beliefs and righteous deeds.

40. 40

    إِنَّآ أَنذَرْنَـٰكُمْ عَذَابًا قَرِيبًا يَوْمَ يَنظُرُ ٱلْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ ٱلْكَافِرُ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى كُنتُ تُرَٰبًۢا

    Indeed, We have warned you of an impending punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth^[1831] and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish that I were dust!"

    Translator’s notes

    [1831]- i.e., the deeds he did in this world, which await him in the Hereafter.

    Tafsir Arabic

    إنَّا حذَّرناكم عذاب يوم الآخرة القريب الذي يرى فيه كل امرئ ما عمل من خير أو اكتسب من إثم، ويقول الكافر من هول الحساب: يا ليتني كنت ترابًا فلم أُبعث.
